INTRODUCTION

“Man masters nature not by force but by understanding. This is why science has succeeded where magic failed; because it has looked for no spell to cast over nature.”

-Jacob Bronowski

Hey everyone! I would like to take this moment to introduce myself. My name is Sharon Joseph and I have created this blog to share with you my passion for science poetry. I was introduced to science poetry by one of my favourite professors through an undergraduate research course as part of one of my assignments. We were asked to explore different careers in science and one of my peers covered the scientific poet. After she presented this career profile, I was so intrigued because I had no idea this was even a career. In a nutshell, it seemed like something I wanted to pursue.

I think what intrigued me the most about science poetry is the idea of two extremely different worlds combining. When I think of poetry, I think of freedom and passion, colouring outside the lines and exploring beyond the human realm. Science on the other hand, is structured and specific, it’s stubborn in its tendencies and follows a set of instructions.

If you take a look at the quote above by Jacob Bronowski, it pretty much sums up why I’ve decided to make this blog. How many of you have ever read a scientific article and felt like you had no idea what the heck they were talking about? Or been to a class and had to memorize excessive amounts of details which pretty much meant nothing to you? Well, this has happened to me so many times I can’t even begin to count.

Science is no fun when you have no idea what you are learning or talking about. Typical textbooks and lectures can make the most interesting topics seem so boring you want to poke your eyes out. My goal through this blog is to introduce science to you in a way that helps you visualize difficult concepts and look at science from a different lens. By viewing information through this artistic light, we can actually appreciate the beauty of even the most mundane concepts.

I hope that by visiting this page and seeing the way that poetry can complement science, you all leave with a bit more knowledge of new concepts and a new way at looking at our scientifically advancing world. Enjoy reading 🙂 .
